Basic PSP9 [Part 1]

Open your PSP program.

First of all we need to select the toolbars and palettes which you will be using most often.

Go to 'View' 'Toolbars' and, if not already selected, click on each of these to select...'Standard' 'Status' and 'Tools'. Then go to 'View' again and this time to 'Palettes' and select 'Layers' 'Materials' and 'Tool Options'

Once selected these palettes will stay onscreen as long as you dont close them with their little 'x'. Theres no need to close each one when you close down your PSP program, just leave them onscreen and they will appear when you open your PSP again. Should you lose them, go to 'View' again and select them again.

If some of the tools mentioned in tutorials appear to be missing, click where you see 2 little arrows at the end of a toolbarand more tools will appear. Also, where you see a single down arrow , you will be able to click for more selections and menus.

Ok..now to get started :-)

Click on 'File' and on 'New'

and this will open a 'New Image' window. Set the settings to these....

and 'OK'

We have started with a size of 300 x 300 pixels here but you can alter this at any time according to the size of the image you want to make.

You will now see a blank chequerboard which is your canvas and  your 'Layer' palette with 'Raster1' in it.

Now to add a picture. PSP uses files called  'Picture Tubes'. There are some already in your PSP program and there are sites on the net which offer tubes to download and save to your pc.

Click on your 'Picture Tube Tool'   and you will see the 'Tools Options' palette spring into life. This palette will change according to which tool you're using, with options for that particular tool.

You will see a little preview picture [yours might be different to the example]

Click on that little picture and this will open a menu. It will show you the picture tubes which you have in your PSP program.

Now, click on an image in the menu to select it ...............

............and it will appear in the little box. I've used 'Autumn Leaves' for this tutorial.

Now, click once on your blank image to place one leaf. [This particular tube has more than one leaf image so the leaves will appear randomly selected] Click a couple more times to add more leaves.

To remove a misplaced  leaf , click on 'Edit' 'Undo Picture Tube'. You will find the 'Edit' 'Undo...' option comes in extremely handy!

You will notice that 'Raster1' is highlighted in your 'Layer' palette which means your leaves are all on the 'Raster 1' layer.

Click on the 'Move Tool'  and click hold and drag your leaves. You will see they all move as one because they are all on the same layer. To move images about independently from each other we can place images each on their own separate layer.

So, go to 'Layers' at the top of your screen and click on 'New Raster Layer' and set your settings to these and 'OK' it.

You will now see that there is a 'Raster 2' layer in your 'Layer' palette in addition to 'Raster1'

With 'Raster 2'  highlighted blue [active] in your 'Layer' palette, click on your 'Picture Tube Tool'  again. Your leaf will still be showing in the little preview window in the 'Tools Options' palette so click on your canvas to place another leaf.

Using the 'Move' tool , click , hold and drag the new leaf and you'll see it moves independently from the others. Your first set of leaves are on the 'Raster 1' layer, the new leaf is on the  'Raster 2' layer above it.
