Basic PSP 9 [Part2]

Adding Text

We will put our text on a new layer, so go to 'Layers'  'New Raster Layer'

You will now have 3 x  'Raster' layers in your 'Layer' palette

With 'Raster 3' highlighted blue in your 'Layer' palette, click on the 'Text' tool   This will open the 'Text Tool Options' palette

If not already selected, click the little arrow at the end of the 'Line Style' and select ' +Solid' from the menu. This gives you a  solid line round the outside of your text.

Click the little arrow next to 'Font' and select a font from the drop down menu. Do the same with 'Size'

make sure 'Floating' is selected and set the 'Stroke Width'  1.0 The 'Stroke width' is the width of the outline of your text.

Now to select a font colour....for this we use the 'Materials' palette.

You will see 2 large boxes on the right of the palette, the top one is the 'Foreground and Stroke Properties' box, and the bottom one is the 'Background and Fill Properties' box.

If you click on the first dot underneath, you will see a drop down with 3 icons.....

It's the 'Colour' one we will be using, the solid black dot, for both the 'Foreground and Stroke' 'and the 'Background and Fill'.

So, starting with the top one [Foreground and Stroke] click on the black dot to select colour, then click on the colour which appears in that box, and this will open the 'Colour' section of the 'Materials Properties' box .

Click on any colour to choose it for the outline of your text. It will appear in the 'Current' box to the right....and 'OK' it.

Your chosen colour will now be in the 'Materials' palette in the 'Foreground and Stroke Properties' box.

Follow this same procedure for the 'Background and Fill' properties, choosing a colour which will be for the body of your text.

When you have your chosen colours, making sure 'Raster 3' is highlighted in your 'Layer' palette, click on your canvas which will open the 'Text Entry' box.....

....... type in your text........

----and click on 'Apply'

You will have noticed that when you opened the 'Text Entry' box, a new layer called  'Vector 1' appeared in the 'Layer' palette. This is because PSP creates text on layers called 'Vector' layers and as we are using 'Raster' layers in this image it automatically provides the 'Vector' layer . This 'Vector'  layer changes to a temporary 'Floating Selection' when you click 'Apply' and will eventually end up as the 'Raster 3' layer.

You will now see your text surrounded by  'Marching Ants'.

Hold your mouse over your text until the cursor changes from to crossed arrows  like that of the 'Move' tool.......and then you can click, hold and drag your text into position.

Go to 'Selections' 'Select None' to deselect [remove the 'Marching Ants'] and the layer with 'Floating Selection' will have gone leaving your text on the 'Raster3' layer

Hovering your mouse over each layer in your 'Layer' palette shows you what you have on each layer

We are going to add a slight drop shadow to the text to make it stand out so with 'Raster 3' still highlighted in blue, go to 'Effects' '3D Effects' 'Drop Shadow' and apply these settings.....and 'OK'

Use the 'Move' tool if you want to rearrange anything.

You will notice that the text is on top of the leaves. This is because the 'Raster 3' layer which has your text on is stacked at the top in your 'Layer' palette.

You can rearrange any of the layers in your palette and stack them how you wish so that some objects will appear behind/in front of others. So for instance, if you'd like the text to appear behind the leaf, click hold and drag your text layer [Raster3 in this instance] to below that of a leaf layer [Raster 2 in this instance]
